with whom we have ongoing contracts
We always welcome enquiries from potential suppliers with
whom we can form a workign partnership
Our systems and procedures, and the resources we have
invested in maximising the potential of equipmnet for re-use means that we can
invariably offer BEST VALUE solutions to our clients -many of whom are able to
make great savings by comparison with any competing organisation.
We work primarily for Public Sector bodies and recognise the
paramount importance of data security and of responsible waste disposal
procedures
Our Data deletion routines are CESG compliant and utilise
one of the only 2 software routines approved by CESG to the required standard
The forthcoming Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment
Directive ( WEEED), and the previously implemenet Reduction of Hazardous
Substances (ROHS) Directive, have led to waste handling procedures being at the
very top of the agenda for any company practising in the field of IT Asset
Management.
WE believe that we have gone further than any competing
organisation to address the waste issue - for details, please use this link Waste handling
The majority of our supplier/clients are Government bodies
or Public Sector organisations and it is a part of our agreement with clients
that we do not reveal their identities, or the basis of any contractual
arrangement without their express permission.

NORTHERN REALISATIONS LTD
Company Outline
Introduction
The Company was formed in
September 1999 to: provide a collection and disposal service for IT &
related business equipment to Public Sector & Corporate Clients. Currently
( October 2005), we are contracted agents to over 100 major clients
Unlike any of our significant
competitors, we are able to provide service at zero cost to our clients, while
providing them with re-use and materials recovery figures in excess of 95%.
The majority of our clients are
from the Governmental & Public Sector, and we recognise the paramount
importance of data protection and
responsible procedures - particularly
for waste management. The company is fully compliant with the W.E.E.E (
Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment) & R.O.H.S ( Reduction of
Hazardous Waste) Directives. In order to ensure complete compliance, We are s
registered with the Environment Agency as a carrier of Hazardous and Special
waste, and our Bolton site is licensed as a Waste Transfer Station.
The company does not export bulk
stocks to Third World Countries
We are founder members of the
Microsoft Authorised Refurbisher Project which has enabled us to supply over
25,000 items to UK schools & registered charities
The company has traded profitably
since its formation and continues under the ownership and management of its
founders
Environmental practice statement
Revised March 2006
The value of refurbishment for
re-use is acknowledged as an
important issue within The Waste
Electrical and Electronic Equipment Directive, and it is acknowledged that recycling for re-use will be recognised
as a significant factor in minimising the environmental impact of the disposal
of electronic equipment.
The implementation of the WEEE
& ROHS Directives has been beset by
many delays, one of which has been the DTI's consultation process on the issue
of re-use - a process to which we have contributed vigorously.
Given that we act for a number of
high profile Governmental and corporate clients who must obviously be seen to be acting in a responsible, ethical and lawful manner, we have established a framework to
meet the needs of our client base.
In order to be completely certain that we are operating within all existing legislation, we are registered as carriers of Hazardous Waste, and our site is licensed as a Waste Transfer Station - we issue a waste Carriage/ Duty of care notice at the point of collection from each client's site.
Our core enterprise is the recycling for re-use of ICT equipment, with the objective of extending the serviceable life of computer hardware made redundant by the acquisition of replacement equipment by its clients.
Recycling for re-use is beyond
doubt the most ecologically benign disposal procedure for ICT equipment given
the very high environmental tolls incurred both in the manufacture and end of
life disposal of the entire spectrum of electronic equipment.
We aim to extend the life of such
equipment beyond its period of utility within its initial working environment
by upgrading and refurbishing this equipment for supply to the educational
community and other users
We are able to demonstrate that we
act positively for the environment by increasing the life span of ICT
equipment, thereby lessening the demand for new equipment with the
environmentally hazardous procedures involved in its manufacture and also by
delaying the point at which equipment must be consigned to waste disposal,
which again has environmental implications.
In the year to the end of
September 2004, we were able to recycle
for re-use 90% by weight of the
equipment handled, over 50% of the recycled equipment being channelled into
schools and educational establishments.
Of the 10% of equipment handled
which is channelled into waste disposal, not less than 60% by weight is
recycled and re-used by materials reclamation processes.
Thus, we can demonstrate that 95%
of materials handled are recycled, and that only 5% of materials are designated
for landfill disposal
The European Union Electrical and
Electronic Equipment Directive proposes a target of 70-90% for the recycling of
IT equipment and components
We are committed to our operations
of recycling for re-use, and in order
to offer a comprehensive disposal facility, we operate waste disposal
procedures in partnership with GRP Electronics, who are ISO 14001 registered
waste carriers and preferred tender contractors to many public sector &
corporate bodies.
Our disposal routes are as follows:
In the year to December 2004, 48%
of the total of equipment handled by the Company was channelled into
educational recycling.
This is operated under agreements with various Government Departments and Microsoft within its Authorised Refurbisher Scheme.
Equipment which meets or exceeds the
minimum platform for the scheme is refurbished and supplied to schools and
voluntary bodies active in education and training.
The current minimum platform is:
Pentium 3/600 mhz processor, 128 mb RAM, 10.00 gB hard disc, 17”
low radiation SVGA colour monitor.
Printers and other peripherals
with at least 12 months expected utility are also supplied with the educational
recycling channel.
The client organisation gifts the
equipment into the educational recycling project and we charge £50.00 per PC
system & £25.00 per printer to the recipients
Equipment which falls below the
threshold for educational recycling, is faulty, incomplete or damaged, but
which can be sold for re use is disposed of by the Company for the best price
achievable and revenues are split between the company and the client in the
ratio of 39/61 respectively. In the year to September, 43% of the total of
equipment handled by us was disposed of
by commercial sale
3) Materials
Reclamation /Waste Disposal
Equipment which falls below the threshold for educational
recycling, and has no perceived commercial value for re-use is disposed of via
the our service partners: Active UK
Utilising modern materials
reclamation techniques, precious & other metals, recyclable glass &
plastics are extracted before any residue is despatched by landfill. Northern
Realisations has so far been able to offer a ‘cost neutral’ disposal service to
its clients and has been able to assimilate waste disposal costs incurred
within its share of revenues on goods sold commercially
In the year to January 2005 , 9 %
of materials handled by us were disposed of via this channel, of which 50% by
weight was extracted for recycling.
Revised January 2005
The purpose of the Policy is to
protect the confidentiality of data which may be held on equipment collected by
the Company on behalf of its public sector and corporate clients
The Company operates the
collection and disposal of ICT equipment for a number of public sector clients
including many local Police Services, Healthcare Trusts, and a number of
Government Departments
The Company are ISO 9001:2000
registered, founder members of the Microsoft Authorised Refurbisher Scheme, and
work with ISO 14001 registered waste disposal service partners
The Company recognises that data
security is of paramount importance to its clients, and acknowledges the
requirement for ‘fail safe’ procedures to be utilised in order to ensure that client
data is deleted beyond recovery before any item of equipment is released from
its care.
The Company also acknowledges that
data held by itself in relation to its dealings with clients is confidential
and that access to this data should be restricted to personnel within the
Company who have completed the required level of training for access to such
data.
1.1 The Company operates from a Victorian Mill premises in Bolton
which is of the robust construction typical of the period. In consultation with
its insurers and Quality Managers, The Company has installed security features
at all perceived points of vulnerability. All windows are protected by 25mm
steel bars at 100mm spacing. All doorways and apertures are protected by steel roller
shutter doors with Grundman ED1 double profile shutter bolts. The premises are
protected by a central reporting Redcare alarm system. With the exception of
the keys held by the three authorised holders, all keys are held off site at
the Company’s safety deposit facility
1.2 Since its formation in October 1999, The Company has experienced
no unauthorised intrusions or attempted intrusions at its premises
1.3 The Company has also constructed an internal area of brick and
block in which all equipment capable of storing data is secured upon receipt
until data deletion procedures have been effected. Access to this area is
restricted to personnel who have been trained in data deletion procedures and
have achieved the level of security clearance required by The Company’s
clients. This ‘quarantine’ area is kept secured at all times.
2.1.1 The Company has recruited many of its personnel from former
members of the armed services. It operates a hierarchal system of training
which ensures that each staff member is adequately trained for, and
understands, the responsibilities associated with their duties.
2.1.2 The Company has made it a condition of employment that all staff
members acquire a Standard Disclosure
from the CRB (Criminal Records Bureau) No member of staff has any criminal
convictions for dishonesty
2.1.3 Staff members who are employed on data deletion are required under
contractual arrangements with certain of The Company’s clients, to obtain Home
Office Security Clearance to “Secret” Level. Five of the Company’s personnel
have contained this clearance.
2.2.1 The Company has invested in an asset tracking system which enables
it to effectively monitor and control every item of equipment handled. An asset
register is prepared for each batch of equipment collected immediately upon
receipt at the Company’s premises. This asset register is updated as each piece
of equipment moves through the disposal procedure
2.2.2 All equipment which is capable of storing data is transferred into
a secure area within The Company’s premises upon receipt, and does not leave
this area until data deletion procedures have been applied and an operative has
signed to confirm that data deletion measures have been applied
2.2.3 The Company has discovered certain vulnerabilities in many of the
software applications commonly used to delete data and has therefore invested
in the Carlisle model 1000 belt degaussing system. With effect from January 1st
2004, The Company utilises physical degaussing procedures to effect data
deletion.
2.2.4 The Company does not use sub-contractors to effect collection of
equipment, and no vehicle is left unattended while loaded. The Company has
effected alterations to its premises to facilitate the parking of vehicles
inside its premises, thus ensuring that no goods are left in vehicles overnight
outside the Company’s premises
3) Summary
The Company believes that it has
in place an effective security policy which it administers with rigour. It is
proactive in its application of security policies and security procedures are a
standing item on the agenda at each of its monthly staff & management
consultations.
